NV driver qualifies for East-West She WESTWOOD MOTORSFORT Park in Coquitlam was the scene of Part 4 of the 1989 Pleyer’s Ltd./GM Motorsport Series West, and was witness to seme of the most frantic action yet seen in this year’s competition. Twenty Camaros and one Firebird hit the track for the 3:30 start, in scorching temperatures. Although the upcoming race- long duel between Coquitian’s Frank Allers and Kevin Dowler of Edmonton was one cf the most hotly contested in recent memory, the four-car scrap for sixth place featured more position shuffling aad hard knocks than you could shake a bent GM at. North Vancouver driver Andy Mahood was in the eye of this storm, challenging the likes of pre-race serics point leader Trevor Seibert of Williams Lake, and Albertans John Simonsen and Car! Harr. Mahood’s IROC-Z had qualified eighth for the August 6 contest, and a position upgrade would be needed in order to compete at the East-West Shootout October in Montreal. : Mahood took a_ conservative style in the opening laps, hoping to save the equipment for late race passing. In Lap 6, the ex-Formula 1600 champ’s strategy paid off as a hor- tific crash involving Calgary’s Wade Lee and the pit wall halted proceedings for half an hour. At the restart, Mahood knew his surrounding competition had burnt out a good amount of brakes and tires, and, as the race progressed, he pushed harder and harder. The four-car warfare came to 2 head mid-race, as Mahood’: Camaro followed Harr irto the hairpin. Seibert was magnetized to Mahood’s rear, coming in too hot. Harr would experience heat in- duced stalling in front and Mahood had no choice but to take his lumps, front and rear. However, he kept his car straight and continued in seventh. The dives and fakes continued, though, each challenging the other in a game of chicken. But on the race’s final circuit, Mahood faked outside, moved in- side, and riarrowly squeaked by Harr to take sixth place at the flag, a jump of two positions from qualifying status. Mahood Formula Racing’s con- sistent results now have the team in fifth place. The top six finishers at season end will attend the shootout. Race 5 of the seven-event series goes Aug. 20 in Calgary.
