8 - Sunday, May 31, 1987 - Nocth Shore News Mailbox Cancer deaths high in H. Sound Dear Editor: According to researcher John Spinelli at The Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver, (in his newly released report), the District of Howe Sound rates as number one in B.C. for lung cancer deaths in both males and females. — I wonder what prompts Ms. Marylou McDonald to write such ignorant letters? The only issue at hand (and ‘‘a fact,’’ according to the ministry of environment) is that the Canadian Forest Products Howe Sound Pulp Mill at Port Mellon has not met the B.C. pollu- tion standards for the emission of toxic gases and particulate matter since receiving its permit in 1978. It continues to spew out poisons far above permitted levels, and has not fulfilled its obligations ordered by the minister of environment. “The fact” is, we have put up with their odors and irritants, and with their blatant disrespect for our waste management laws for far too long. But, ‘‘in fact,’ we aren't going Christians march to a different drummer Dear Editor: Well, well, well, what have we now? Doug Collins as a latter-day prophet, thundering forth in the North Shore wilderness, not only telling the churches what they should do, but also making state- ments about what church people believe. : Of course he can’t understand the motivation of anyone who doesn’t fit into’ his rigid little mind-set. Echoes of the British Empire, circa 1890! The news is, Doug, that Chris- tians march to a different drum- mer. We do not think of people in terms of labels: pansies, Sikhs, Orientals, blacks, feminists or even WASPs; we think in terms of in- dividuals who have needs and who also have talents and qualities of their own to contribute. You won't influence the chur- ches by haranguing them from your cosy corner at the North Shore News, Doug. Why don’t you come on in and find out what goes on from the inside?
