~ Sunday, January 11, 1987 - North Shore News LOCAL ATHLETES Gymnasts quality for provincial team SIX GYMNASTS from North Vancouver's 1988 Best Ever girl's program and one West Vancouver Recreation Centre gymnast were recently named to the B.C. team for the Canada Winter Games to be held Feb. 21 to 28 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. In the first men's competition, Mike Lockitch finished third in the trials and will compete this year at the junior national level, The six girls were chosen after 15 gymnasts competed at North Vancouver's Flicka Gym Club Dec. 21 and have the chance of re- taining the silver medal position held by the B.C. team at the 1983 games in Chicoutimi, Quebec. Only two points separated the winner from the other members of the team as Kristin Wingfield, 16, of the West Vancouver led with a 35.450 total. She finished just ahead of Jeanette Hrubes, 15, from the Okunagan-Kokanee Gym Club who had 35.375. Wingfield won both the beam and the floor exercise events both, with a score of 9,00. Third and fourth positions on the team went to two Surrey sisters, Krista and Lisa Onno, who finished with scores of 34.675 and 34,225 respectively. In fifth place was North Van- couver's Ursula Trpin with 34.275 and sixth position went to Miriam Michel, 17, of Coquitlam, who did not compete because of injury, but had a medical petition. The two alternate gyninasts to the girls team’ were Kelowna’s Heather Andrews with a score of 33.90 and Helen Carmichael of North Vancouver with 33.20. Hrubes won the uneven bar event with a 9.30, the highest indi- vidual score of the meet. All of the girls train in North Vancouver under the Best Ever Program and will compete in the games for the first time, Next competition for the girls is the annual North Shore Invita- tional on Jan. 24, at BCIT, in Burnaby, where they meet top gymnasts from across Canada and the United States and a team from England at this meet. Local youth trys out for B.C. hockey team THE NORTH Shore Winter Club’s ‘Keith Randall was among 30 junior ‘‘B’’ hockey players who were selected to attend the Christmas camp in Trail to deter- mine who will be selected to Team B.C. for the Canada Winter Games. Team B.C. will be coached by Tom Renney and Derek Spring at the Canada Winter Games, which will be held in Cape Breton, Feb. 14-28, 1987. The hockey competi- tion will be held during the second week and Team B.C. will be trying to bring home the gold medal. In 1979 B.C. won the gold medal and in 1983 they lost to On- tario in overtime and came home with the silver. The Christmas camp was the final chance to evaluate the players as the coaching staff named their final roster following the camp. Randall, who suffered a groin injury prior to the Christmas camp, was unable to attend, but hopes to join the team at its next practice session. items while quantities last a
