But it’s important to use only the plastic wrap that’s totally suit- able for microwave cooking. That means that it withstands the high temperatures reached in microwave cooking. Other wraps may melt and stick to foods. Following are more quick and convenient tips for the microwave oven, employing the aid of plastic wrap. Wrap a peeled, whole turnip in plastic wrap. Microwave on high, 10 to 12 minutes. Let stand in the plastic wrap 20 minutes. Cut up, season and serve. This eliminates the difficulty of cutting a raw tur- nip. Left over foods wrapped in plastic wrap can be reheated directly from the refrigerator. Place the wrappe¢c food in the oven and microwave on high, one to five minutes, depending on the type of food and quantity. No need to use a dish. FOOD REVAMPED Soften tortillas by wrapping in plastic wrap and: microwaving on high, 15 to 20 seconds for each tortilla. They will remain soft if left covered until ready to use. * Cook extra pancakes or French toast. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate or freeze. For a quick, early morning breakfast, reheat quickly by microwaving on high for one to two minutes. Turn your mixing bowls, stone- ware serving bowls, or glass baking dishes into covered casserole dishes by using plastic wrap. Wrap tight- ly for moist and tender results and turn up a small corner of the cover to allow excess steam to escape during cooking. (This is called “venting’’). For perfectly ‘‘poached’’ eggs, break eggs into little cups or muf- fin pans (don’t use metal), pierce the yolk and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on medium power for one minute per egg. No need to boil water. You can also hard cook eggs this way for salads. Poach a whole fish right on an attractive stoneware or other mi- crowave-safe serving platter. Cover with plastic wrap and steam to moist perfection. In a baking dish covered with plastic wrap you can quickly poach chicken and turkey pieces for use in salads and sandwiches. VEGETABLE MANAGEMENT Arrange a colorful assortment of fresh vegetables on a circular mi- crowave-safe serving platter in a pretty design. Place more dense vegetables closer to the outside edge; smaller pieces in the centre. Cover with plastic wrap. The water remaining on vegetables from washing is suf- ficient to steam them to delicious tender crispness. Microwave on high, six to eight minutes. STUDIES at the Vancouver Research Station show that onion growers can reduce the number of sprays for onion maggot from six to one per season. For carrot rust fly, the figures are from seven to an average of less than one spray per season. “Developing un accurate method of determining if a crop needs to be treated and then treating at precisely the correct time can save growers miliions,” says Dr. Ron Forbes, head of en- tomology and assistant director of the Vancouver Research Station. “For onion growers, the cost saving alone will be over $100 per hectare.”’ Ne) Ker RORIVEWAY mh SEALER For a newer, cleaner looking dfveway Easy to apply { Windsor’s if CORONATION ’ PAINT T& PLYWOOD now 1 deck! Results of this magnitude re- quire a strategy based on solid research data. For example, onion growers had been using yellow traps to estimate populations of adult flies. Resear- chers tested 5£ different colors and found that the flies preferred white and blue. Also, the pests preferred 308 square centimeter traps placed just over the crop and near the outer edge of the field.
