Now on to other things,

When a friend asked me to at-
tend the David Neel Spirit of the
Earth mask exhibit at the Van-
couver Museum, | thought,
“Yeah, like | haven’t seen
enough native masks for one life-
time.”

But | went, And the masks are
awesome,

Aboriginal cultures have long
used masks to satirize and depict
the events and concepts of their
times, but until recently, artists
stayed with traditional themes.

Neel, however, has taken the
traditional techniques and applied
them to modern themes.

With his obvious talent for carv-
ing, and using brilliant colors, Neel
created 20 masks.

The Overpopulation Mask
displays nausea as smaller beings
emerge from its eyes and mouth.
The Chernobyl Mask shows the
devil’s satisfied grin. The Clearcut
Mask indicates thorough exhaus-
tion. The Nuclear Arms Mask
depicts insanity. The Mohawk
Warrior Mask is jeering, sneering,
and stupid-looking. The En-
dangered Species Mask is a
touching portrayal of complete
peace, innocence and clarity of
thought,

| highly recommend that you
catch this exhibit. You have plenty
of time ~ it’s on until next March,

North Van film-maker Peter von
Puttkamer, by the way, used
Neel’s work in his documentary
Spirit of the Mask, which explores
maskwork.

He's now at work on another
documentary, as yet untitled,
which will focus on the modernist
movement in aboriginal art. The
documentary will include Nee!

others,

And a final note about the Van-
couver Museuii. Regency Cater-

restaurant so you can finally get a
decent meal there!

Never let it be said that driving
rain or a Burnaby location kept me
from my duties -- or, in this case,
a party with well-toned athletes,

A good crowd turned up at
Severin’s restaurant for the official
World Cup send-off party, which
was held to, well, send the Cana-
dian National Soccer Tearn off to
the World Cup’s final qualifying
round.

Seven of the Vancouver 86ers
are on the national team, in-
cluding North Van's Cael Valen-
tine, and the team’s now in the
third, and final, round of quali-
fying games.

As lt understand it, they have to
beat out El Salvador, Mexico and
Honduras; then either Australia or
New Zealand; then whomever
wins of the South American teams
(uh-oh).

The World Cup takes place in
nine American cities, June 17 to
July 17. National ‘eam coach,
North Van’s Bob Lenarduzzi is
confident of his team’s abilities.

The 86ers’ 1993 season, which
begins April 30 with a game
against Toronto at Swangard
Stadium, is the team’s first as
member of the seven-team Ameri-
can Professional Soccer League.
The league also includes Montreal,
Denver, L.A., Tampa and Ft.
Lauderdale.

at the party: North Van PR person
Laura Vandriel and her most
amiable producer boyfriend,
Walter Mustapich.

Which brings me to two notes of
congratulations.

Vandriel and Mustapich have
announced that they will soon
wed.

Mustapich did the ultra-romantic
proposal thing — on a beach, |
think — but they may elope.

West Van's Richard Lindsey
and Leana Bumett, on the other
hand, have announced that they
will do the no-holds-barred big
sprash at the Park Royal Hotel in
uly. .

And still along the line of
romance — sort of...

Do you recall my telling you
about the British Properties
would-be heiress who had the
husband, fiance, two boyfriends
and an undead father? . :

Well, after t printed her story,
she and her husband apparently
decided that they’d caused way
too much trouble for themselves
and have agreed to work out their
differences.

They are now reunited.
