56 - Friday, April 19, 1985 - North Shore News Every day ak MOJO IS A SPARKLING blend of the old and the new. A band that has taken classic rhythm and blues, and reggae rhythms, fused them with the energy of modern music, and come up with what Mojo original, Tim McHugh, calls ‘‘African pop’’. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW Until mid-June 1984, Mojo was the ‘A’-circuit lounge duo of McHugh and Joani Bye, a successful musical partnership that goes back six years. Last summer the two joined forces with ex- Blenders, Cecille Larochelle and Scan Hosein. The result brings an automatic smile to McHugh’s face: ‘‘The magic in this band comes only once in lifetime.”’ As a band, Mojo has always striven to be more than a static purveyor of Top Fortiana. And though that is MOJO WORKING. Playing at Holiday’s to April 27, Mojo knocks out a bright blend of originals and classics from the 60s and 70s in their infectious rhythm and blues meets the 80s style. Oy ee op the standard fare demanded by most nightclub owners, McHugh's songwriting abilities and Bye’s vocal dex- terity have usually combined to overcome nightclub owner and audience fears of original material. As a quartet, the band re- tains this core of musical originality and bolsters it with the modern pop sen- siblities of Larochelle and Hosein. Cover versions of 60s and 70s classics ranging from ‘'The Banana Boat A Little A Little Luxury WW Song" to ‘‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ to ‘*Satislaction*’ to ‘‘Walk On The Wild Side’’ are taken by the band and converted into Mojo Music: electrified 80s rhythm and blues that vaults off the stage with excellent’ vocals and bubbling musical snap. Bye (guitar), Larochelle (keyboards), and Hosein (drums and percussion) han- dle the bulk of Mojo vocals. While McHugh, the band’s principal songwriter, anchors the Mojo sound with . . 4 . Insistence on using the half dozen Mojo originals that the band works into each set has, according to McHugh, tossed compromise to the winds and invested the band with personality. “We're not a small town band. Audiences seem either to love us or hate us, there’s no grey area,’’ says McHugh.
