C4 - Friday, September 21, 1984 - North Shore News Gl entertainment ae Good looks do not counter weak acting BO DEREK is looking for ecstacy but all she can find in her latest and worst film yet, Bolero, is ex- tacy. If poor spelling was the only problem with this movie, it might spell success for Bo’s director and husband John. But it turns out that not only is hubby John a lousy movie director, he can’t even successfully sell Bo’s body to the theatre crowd. Bolero is so bad that it doesn’t even rate to be called a B grade porn flick. In fact, the only excuse for this film may well turn out to be that after trying to edit it, the pro- ducers found themselves with the entire film lying on the cutting room floor. This led them to scrap the idea of making a serious film and left them hoping the audience would think it was a comedy. No such luck. It only leaves peopie crying over the $5 they wasted see- ing it. Bo might have gotten away with starring in Bolero if she had not been called upon to do something she can't do. Act. All you want to do is reach the end of Bolero without falling asleep. That’s hard to do when even the characters are falling asleep. Bolero is about Bo’s hard fought battle to lose her virginity. It’s her graduation present to herself, after com- ing of age and gaining her substantial inheritance. So, with her chauffeur friend and schoolmate she sets off to find an Arab sheik to aid her in her quest. His single ‘‘Albany’’ rose to the top of the charts on the German Hit Parade, he headlined his own TV special for BBC T V , and in the U.S.A his “All Time Hearttouching Favorites”’ album was an outstanding hat In 1983, Whittaker toured the United States in’ two segments, cast and west, per- formed at a Royal Gala Charity and sold over a milhon copies of a new album in Germany. While Bolero offers us a host of nude poses and posi- tions to ponder Bo in, it just doesn’t offer us any reason to wait for John and Bo’s next film. The best actors in this film are the Spanish Arab horses that Bo does her Lady Godiva act on. Bo Derek was at least seductive in the movie Ten. In Bolero, she is just boring, with or without her clothes on. Bolero is now playing at the Odeon. esent> DYNASTY coach poco ian.
