It gets top marks tor enthusiasuc and = qualhfied teachers, talented students, and above average facilities. Rob Karr and Peter Tavlor, joint heads of the senior high’s music department are both professional musicians who try to give their students as much of a4 professional background as possible. The school offers such diverse musical outlets as jazz choir and band, concert choir and = band. guitar classes and small workshops. Carson Graham is well known for its music department. and not only on the North Shore. Students. are crossing boundaries to take advantage of the department so the talent in the school is above average and. not surprisingly. many of the students go on to study music at a higher level or bhecome- professional musicians themselves. And the graduates con- tinue to support the music department, says Karr. so that an increasing network of talented musicians ts associated with Carson. Kart holds a Bachelor o! The increasing recognition combined with the standard high performance of the music students is creatingt greater opportunity for them to learn in a_ professional atmosphere. Sometimes they even perform onginal material. Their recent Jazz Band Festival included three college bands from the Pacific Northwest. and Tonight Show drummer, Ed Shaughnessy who is also a renowned jazz drummer as their guest star. The show was sold out with people being turned away at the doors. “Its really neat that our students can be in the company of artists of that calibre” says Karr. The two teachers tried to be modest. talking to me. but their pride in their department 1s as obvious as ther excitement.
