By OLGA RUSKIN A number of West Vancouver students are going to have proof finally this month that the moon isn’t made from’ green cheese. They are even going to be able to hold the en- cased fragments of the moon brought back by the astronauts on their historic lunar flight in 1969 and examine them under a microscope. Six moon rocks are being sent by NASA to Hillside Secondary science teacher Jerry Stewart. This is the first time the moon rocks have travelled out of U.S. territory, and Stewart had to go through a special cer-. tification process with NASA's Education officer Garth Hull. Stewart has been en- trusted with the care of the moon rocks from October 22 to November 2. During this time his science students from grades 8 to 12 will be studying them. On October 26, teachers and ‘students in the district will have the opportunity to view them at West Van Secondary. An Open House at Hillside on October 29 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. will give other students. 8 community round up} West Van students to touch the moon their parents and the community an opportunity to see the moon rocks. The moon rocks are six chips each the size of a thumb nail sealed in a 20 cm. acrylic disc. They include samples from the lunar soil, the lunar sea, mountain ranges and also breccia (fragments of other rocks). Stewart explains that the moon rocks have to be sealed because they are “alien” to this world. “As they haven't been exposed to our atmosphere they will weather or become rusted if this happens.” He feels that students through this unique hands-on experience will be able to compare the moon with the earth and see that “itis no longer to them a piece of green cheese.” Nine Hillside students have been picked to assist in the display by explaining the film strips that accompany the rocks. A teacher whose speciality is geology. Stewart is par- ticularly interested in planetary geology. He has been to NASA headquarters at Moffett Field in California where he watched Pioneer II in its joumey to reach Saturn. The B.C.
