In a study published in the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology a while ago, babies less than three days old were found .to prefer sweetened water to plain water. . But just because we may have been born with a fond- ness. for sweet stuff doesn’t mean we have to give in to it. Apart from the commonly known capacity of sugar to cause dental caries (and who wants to lose his sweet tooth to tooth decay?), there are other reasons why we should talk back to oursweet tooth. For one thing, simple sug- ars (versus the complex sugars found in milk, fruits and vegetables) provide calones without providing nutrients. For the dicter, all those nutritionally empty calories are an obstacle to weight loss. When you're on a weight loss diet, it's more important than ever that e every calorie count nutritionally to avoid short- changing your body of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients it requires. “ Whats a dieter with a sweet tooth to do? First, try satisfying that sweet tooth naturally with options of complex sugars like apples, pears, oranges, grapes, bananas or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots or dates. A small amount of sugar, molasses, honey or syrup is also an option to help make your nutritious choices more palatable. But small is the eperative word. Or try the Opposite approach. Munch on dill pickles or a moderate serving of popcorn. One woman I know swears that by just brushing her tecth with mint-flavored paste when the craving hits. Learning to talk back to your sweet tooth is one way to ‘think slim” on your-way to vour diet goal.
