‘Movie maker’ ruled out
as Cove rapist

Community rife with rumors

A man who attempted to
persuade various Deep Cove
children to undress and let
him film them has been ruled
out by RCMP investigators
in North Vancouver as being
connected in any way with
the rape of an 11-year-old
girl there last weekend.

Police say the Cove is in
an uproar and “fraught with
rumors trying to link up the
two” incidents but that
detectives are convinced
there is no connection.

A 30-year-old Burnaby
man was arrested Sunday
after being held by two
parents of children he was
said to have approached —
the day after a Vancouver
girl was raped in Myrtle
Park

He was released = after
questioning by pohce and an
RCMP. spokesman told the
News: “Investigators have
saushied themselves that the
person arrested by the
ciaurens Sunday 1s in no way
related to the rape oon
Saturday He has not been
charged although charges
are still being Considered ”

The spokesman said the
arrested man had ap
proached children aged
between 10 and Il in the
Dollarton area on various
oc CaSIONS

The spokesman stressed:
“He did not touch anybody.”
adding : “He was attempting
to talk boys and girls into
dropping their pants so he
could photograph them.”

He is said to have had a
movie camera with him and
to have told children he
wanted them to help him
make a comedy movie,
similar to a scene in the
Steve Martin movie The
Jerk.

Police say a search of the
man’s Burnaby home turned
-up some photos of unclad
children he had
photographed in other areas

Meanwhile, police are
looking at the possibility of a
connection between the
Saturday rape and other
rapes in different areas

officers visited all three
Deep Cove schools and
distributed 1,100 leaflets to
children, asking for in
formation that may help tn
the investigation oof the
Saturday rape

The man they are looking
for lured two girls into a
secluded wooded area on the
pretext of helping him look
tor a missing dog

There he told them he was
armed with a gun and made
a nine year-old tic with her

ft. 8 in. and 6 ft. tall and has

Police say his appearance
