Tourists spending more in Canada OTTAWA (UPC) - Foreign tourists spent more than $1.1 bilhon in Canada during the first six months of 1980, an increase of 14.7 per cent over the previous year, Statistics Canada reported Monday. However, spending by Canadians travelling abroad also increased, by almost 10 per cent, to a total of $2.3 billion. IN CENTRAL PARK This left Canada with a travel deficit of $1.182 bilhon for the first half of the year - up $62 million over the same period in 1979. Spending by foreigners other than Americans contributed to the improved travel picture, the federal agency said. Altogether, non-U.S. residents spent $329 million in the first six months, compared to $274 million last year. Crowd watches brutal slaying NEW YORK (UPI) - At least 30 people watched a vagrant beaten and stabbed to death in a mid-morning attack in Central Park but no one went to the victim's aid. The slaying Sunday, which occurred shortly before 9 a.m., was reminiscent of the Kitty Genovese case that drew national attention two decades ago as an example of urban indifference. “Nobody came near,” said Transit Authonty Polhce Officer Charles Irving. “I can half understand it - it was so awful they had to be frightened. But there's strength m numbers. They could have thrown a rock or something.” “They did nothing to stop it.” Irving said 30 to 40 people were standing along Central Park West about 90 feet away from where a man identfied as Jimmy Lee Jones attacked another man who had been sleeping on a rock in the park, beating him with a wire litter basket. Jones then took a piece of wire from his pocket and tried to sever the victim's head. When Irving reached the scene, the victim was lying face down in a pool of blood and Jones was kneeling over him, the officer said. Jones was arrested. The scene was reminiscent of the 1963 slaying of a Queens barmaid, Kitty Genovese.
