~The Indonesian freighter is tak-
ing on a shipment of forest pro-
ducts before making its way
across the Pacific Ocean.

While: Seaboard will handle a
variety of products, its main cargo
is lumber and plywood.

In| 1992, Seaboard shipped the
fumber .equivalent of 906 million
FBM (foot board measure). or 1.4
million tonnes to world markets.

“That would be a very good

year. Today, the biggest market is
Japan but. we export all over the
world,’’ said Mel Bjorndal,
Seaboard vice-president of ship-
ping.

He added that the 55-acre (22.5
hectares) North Vancouver termi-
nal, which was established on the
focal waterfront in 1972, ranks
among the Jargest through-put
forest products terminals in the
world,

“dts the largest forest products
terminal in terms of volume in
North America. The market is
very competitive right now.
There’s competition primarily be-
tween Vancouver (port corp.) and
Fraser Dock,” said Bjorndal.

He added that the Seaboard In-
ternational Terminal, which is a
division of the Seaboard Shipping
Co. Ltd., is mainly involved in
receiving, storing and delivering
forest products supplied by several
shippers.

The company will employ up to
200 unionized longshoremen daily
and most of its lumber products,
about 78%, arrive in North Van-
