By Surj Rattan News Reporter He way not be in the market for it, but if you're looking to unload a quality item of native art, North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks could probably be talked into taking it off your hands. His office is decorated with several pieces of native art he has bought over the years, some of them carved by former students of his when he used to be a teacher and principal in North Vancouver. He admits he’s a sucker for good native art, even when he’s not looking to buy. Loucks holds up one of the pieces in his office and says: “This was made by a former student of mine.’’ He then Pauses to reflect and adds: ‘‘Ac- tually, at one time he needed a good swift kick in the back side.” In November, Loucks, who has sat in the mayor’s chair for the past 13 years, enters into what he says will likely be his last election campaign. “I don’t want to be like Peter Lester. I'm not going for a re- cord,’” laughs Loucks, as he refers to the veteran Prince Rupert mayor who, in his 80s, is the longest serving mayor in Canada. “think if I get in this time it will be my last term. | think you have to hang things up eventual- ly.” Born in what was then called the municipality of South Van- couver (Vancouver was a separate municipality) in #918, the 72- year-old Loucks spent 33 years working as an elementary school teacher, a principal and an ad- ministrator with the North Van- couver School Board before he decided to trade his education cap in for a political hat. | ey NEWS photo Terry Peters JACK LOUCKS: The veteran North Vancouver City mayor is going for one more term in office. One of the first things a visitor to Loucks’ spacious office will notice is a familiar blue and white bus stop pole standing in a corner which acts as a coat rack. And while a natural reaction is to give His Worship a sideways glance, thinking he may have reverted back to his youth and started pulling practical jokes in- volving city property, on closer inspection, and after reading an engraved subscription, it becomes evident that the pole is a gift to Loucks from the Greater Van- couver Regional Transit Commis- sion. The development of the Lower Lonsdale area, says Loucks, is one of the most pressing issues facing his council today.
