Ted White t North Van MP says direct democracy will be his focus Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver MP Ted White is lacing up his track shoes for. another run at parlia- ment. The Canadian Mtiance MP announced Monday that he will again seek office when the nest federal election is called. This comes despite the fact that White pledged at the beginning of his first term in 1993 that he would only serve amaximum of wo terms as rid- ing MIP. In a Monday interview with the News at his Lynn Valley constituency — headquarters, White said ‘that he has more work to do in the House before he folds his cards. “When I ran in 1993 I said T would only run for two terms and [I guess at that time a decade seemed like a long time. At the time it was a very defi- nite decision,” said White. However, after former Alberta treasurer Stockwell Day was elected as the new party leader Jast month over former Reform party leader Preston Manning, White decided to rethink his retirement plans. “Obviously, the playing field cha anged,” said White. “Everything changed dramati- cally.” Earlier this month Day awarded White the democratic and parliamentary reform port- ‘folio. He also promoted White’s —calleague, West Vancouver Garibaldi MP John Revie dds, to app. STL wlup. Revnolds had supported Manning's run for the keader ship. White cited Dav’s embrace of direct. democracy ~- in the form of citizen-initiated refer endums ~— as the major factor that spurred him) to consider running again, “Stockwell is our best chance to get into the seats on the government side. [need to be there to make sure this leg- isation goes through.” fy cording to a July 28 Anges Reid Group poll, if an election were held today, the Liberals would receive 45% of the vote with the Canadian Alliance posting a 24% show- ing. The NDP, PC and Bloc partes would finish at 11%, 10% and 10%, respectively. The poll also shows Prime Minister Jean Chretien with the highest approval rating among the federal party leaders with 57%. Day comes in at sec- ond with 45%, “We'll do one more term, make sure we get this legista- tion through and ther that’s it, definitely,” said White. White realizes that his detractors are about to get a lit- de more fuel for their fire after his about-face, but said he's not fazed. “I'm sure there were quite a few people looking for- ward to my retirement,” mused White. “To those people I would say you'll just have to go home, have a stiff drink and get on with life, because I'm com- ing back.” run ag poets eee eee ee NEWS photo Julie iverson NORTH Vancouver Canadian Alliance MP Ted White announced Monday he will seek another term.
