Smokes smuggler chokes on big fine ji

A 62-year-old West
Vancouver man was fined
$227,382 last month for
possessing illegal cigarettes.

cartons of cigarettes and 2,994
bags containing 200 grams of
tobacco.

The tobacco products were
seized at Braddick’s home in the
5600-block of Eagle Harbour Road
in 1994 by Vancouver RCMP
Customs and Excise section offi-
cers.

Police said the tobacco and ciga-
rettes came from the United States.

New Westminstrr provincial
court Judge A. MacKenzie fined
Braddick $65,868 and $161,504
for two charges laid under the
Excise Act. The charges state that
the tobacco products were improp-
erly labelled. The fine is based on
the amoune of cigarette tax evaded.

The judge fined Braddick $10
for a third charge laid under the
B.C. Tobacco Tax Act and gave
Braddick five years ro pay the fines.

Insp. John Ferguson, of the
Vancouver RCMP Customs and
Excise, said the tobacco seizure was
sizeable, but not unusual.

The RCMP inspector said police
believe the illicit sale of cigarettes

costs the provincial government at
icast $100 million a year in lost
taxes. Ferguson said that large-scale
organized crime is frequently
involved in the sale of smuggled or
illegal cigarettes.

“Jt can be more profitable than
drugs and you have less risk because
nobody seems to go to jail for any
length of tine,” said Ferguson.
