Party Finance Critic
Herb Grubel will not
run in the next federal
election.

Grubel said he has a heart
condition that is not life
threatening but is aggravated
by the travelling lifestyle of a
B.C.-based MP.

He added that in February
he will be 63 and finds the job
demands difficult. “I've liad a
great learning experience here
and an extra four years would

notadd a lot to that,” he said.

Grubel intends to return
to his job as an economics
professor at Simon Fraser
University and do research
and public policy work at the
conservative Fraser Institute.

Grubel made national
headlines in August when he
spoke at a Whistler conference
organized by che International
Society for Individual Liberty.
Critics attacked Grubel for
attended what they called a
gathering of racists and anti-
Semites,

Grubel rejected the criti-
cism, saying the group merely
stood for smatler, decentral-
ized government and were
not extremist.

A bad analogy which
Grubel nuw calls a “rookie
mistake” brought Grubel
widespread attention in 1994,
At the time Grubel said lot-
tery winners and those who
inherit, megabucks — fulfill
dreams of living on a tropical
island. But they soon revurn
north because life in the suuth
seas is meaningless for them.
And similarly, welfare keeps
natives down and life mean-
ingless for them.

Grubel said, however, that
a reporter wrote that he cam-
pared native reserves with lift
ona south-sea island.
