In the 1950s, GM identified the constituents of photochemical smog, in Los Angeles and its research contributed to the understanding of smog formation. GM has also performed defini- tive studies of the Denver “brown cloud” phenomenon, conducted research on dispersion of pollutants near roadways and, in 1971, and has become the first aulo company to initiate research into the global meteorological impacts of the auto- mobile. Current GM research efforts include cooperative projects through =the Environmental Research Consortium to study the atmospheric reactivity of hydrocar- bons and their impact on air quuli- ty, as well as atmospheric modeling to determine the impacts of differ- ent control strategies on ozone lev- els. Other activities include rea]- world emissions measurements and an Auto/Oil joint project to reduce emissions through reformulated fuels. Perhaps GM's best-known contribution to exhaust emissions control was the introduction of the catalytic converter. In 1975, GM was the first vehi- cle manufacturer to install the cat- alytic converter on all it cars sold in North America. ' Five years ago, GM was the first company to make the converters available on a full line of its cars sold in Europe. And GM research and develop- ment scientists continue to explore innovative ways to improve the design and performance of its cat- alytic converters under the most adverse operating conditions. For example, GM powertrain engineers recently developed diesel lechnology to meet the increasingly stringent “particle emissions” stan- dards. GM has also been pushing the development of electronic sensors, controls and the diagnostics that make today’s engines more effi- cient and less polluting than those of the past. Another first for the American automaker was the recent develop- ment of methods to obtain real- world measurements of tailpipe emissions from vehicles while they’re being driven. mS NORTH SHORE PARTS & & Se INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIES IS NOW... my” @ Auto Parts Plus "YOUR AUTO PARTS SPECIALIST” 2 LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU BETTER 1425 Main Street North Vancouver, B.C. 980-6531 ° 980-4508 AirCare SPI Our 36th Year Vern Poulter Mike Charbala ‘94 SATURN SL widely recognized as the best automotive value at any price.
