Bail granted A MAN convicted of several criminal! negligence charges in connection with the deaths of two people at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminalin 1990 was granted bail Thursday in the B.C. Court of Appeal. Jatinderpal Singh Ubhi, 25, was convicted of two criminal negligence charges causing death and five crim- inai negligence ckarges causing bodily harm after the A-1 Paving Ltd. dump truck he was driving in July 1990 left a@ mandatory brake-check siation atop a hill on the Up- per Levels Highway and sped past ferry terminal ticket booths before turning into lane four and plowing into a Ford passenger van filled with holiday travellers who were waiting to board a ferry. - Killed in the crash were a mother and her nine-year- old daughier from Ontario. Ubhi was originally sentenced to 18 months in jail. Thet sentence was later increased to five years in jail. Ubhi was also banned from driving for 15 years. Ubhi’s lawyer, Russ Chamberiain, has won the right to appeal kis client's conviction and has asked for a new trial. He said he has uncovered new evidence that sug- gests Ubhi is mentally retarded.
