The earth is worth these students’ time Students from Caulfeild Elemen- tary School in West Vancouver got down to earth work recently. Thanks to Earthwork, a book of 51 teaching ideas for global education, students from Caulfeild formed their own Ecology Club. They asked to have a compost box built, then arranged a school-wide collection system. After each lunch period they empty the classroom containers into the box, sometimes adding lime and dirt. The program was started up by the students and should reduce a jot of food waste at the school. It will also make a good soil sup- plement for the school garden. Earthwork promotes the preser- vation of the earth and encourages people to do something about global issues. Response shows kids favor moth spraying LAST WEEK ZAP! asked if you thought the spraying for gypsy moths was necessary. What a response! And mostly in favor. The spraying is necessary or otherwise the moths will eat all the trees and ail the Vancouver area will be bare, and the en- vironmental side effects will be nothing compared to that. As much as my family is an en- vironmentalist family, we gotta have trees for the environment and if they eat all the trees what sre we gonna have left? Of course, it’s important. Kt’s necessary if you want to save thousands of jobs, otherwise T really don’t think it is necessary. This spraying is very necessary because if we don’t do it then a lot of trees will die and our for- estry will be very affected and we'll have to do the spraying ne matter what. In the newsletter they posted out it did say the spraying was not dangerous, it doesn’t have any effect on kamans, it only has effects on caterpillars, and the butterflies will be reestablished. The most it cam do to humans is maybe cause bay fever, and that’s not much. I don’t see any problem. I think the spraying is necessary elthough I don't really know that much about it so I can’t really be that critical on either person's side. If people don’t think it's safe they should state their opinion to whoever is in charge. It should be done cuz if they ure a threat to our forests and you can stop them why wouldn’t you? Go ahead with it. I think it is necessary because these gypsy moths are gonna totally wreck our whole pianet if we don’t spray them. I don’t see where it’s a problem to the environment. I'd like to very much know what it’s causing on the environment because I don’t believe that. I recently visited Ontario snd DAAAAAAAAAA. you can hear — hear — the gypsy moths eating away at the trees. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. We have to spray, it’s a_ matter of saving al? our trees. Peaple have to open their eyes and realize that there’s no other way to go. I think it’s really necessary because it’s not bad for the en- vironment, it’s saving it rather than having all our trees killed by these moths. I think they should spray it anyways because then the stupid moths will rip down our forest.
