By Michael Becker News Reporter Said Ali Nobari, a North Van- couver resident and spo'esman for the recently-formed Persian Muslim Foundation (PMiF), ‘“‘It's something sadly lacking for the franian community.”’ Approximately 35,f%0 people of Iranian descent live throughout the Lower Mair'and. About 10,000 have moved io the North Shore. The majority {cft lran in the wake of the A-atollah Ruhollah Khomeini-driven revolutionary transition from monarchy to Islamic republic. The PM# was established by Iranian expatriates two months ago to fulfil two goals: build a mosque jocally and set up a Per- sian larguage school. The founda- tion is,honorarily headed by Dr. Ali Jéadi of Delta. Wobari said the foundation wanibership is not sympathetic to the revolution in Iran, but it is not egainst Islam. Nobari said the group deter- mined that the greatest demand for Persian language education will come from the children of Iranian Muslim families who can speak the language but cannot read or write it. The free classes are open to ail ages and will be taught by volun- teers. Organizers are asking potential students for a $10 dona- tion to the school, which will be called Dehkhoda School in honor of the man who compiled a mod- ern Persian language dictionary. The ambitious program is offer- ing tuition at all grade levels up to university and tutorials in all sub- jects, including Koranic instruc- tion, For example one volunteer, who teaches mathematics at UBC, is interested in helping people “think scientifically” in the Per- sian language. Said Nobari, ‘‘Many have of- fered their services as teachers.’’ The group plans eventually to locate the Persian language school at the mosque and community centre site.
