It soon drops down to two when you find out which studios can do it all. “We can ali say we're doing it, but the reaiity comes when some- one says, ‘OK do it,’ and you can’t, Then, the damage is done.” Behind Pinewood’s numerous doors people play with knobs and dials and monitor sounds from behind windows of glass, like the Wizard of Oz behind his curtain. Turner shows off his flashy metallic contro! centre and leads me into a room where one of his technicians is creating the sound effects of a character being hit in the face for one of Cannell Films’ ing reputation for its work, Turner tears a few strips off the myth that Vancouver is quickly catching up to L.A. “Everyone says B.C. is Hollywood North, but we're nat Hollywood anything. We're still in the learning process’’ (when it comes to post-production). “Traditionally, we (Pinewood) don’t attract large work — we get low-budget films in the $5-6 mil- lion range right now. Some of the big American movies — like Ter- minator Two — cost in the neighborhood of $100 million to make.”’ Although the bulk of Pinewooad’s clients are from the U.S., most big American producers — Disney for example — still do most of their 44 Everyone says B.C. is Hollywood North, but we're not Hollywood anything. And Turner doesn’t blame them. “If you were a producer and you had $100 million to spend, would you go to a town where you didn’t know anyone? No, you'd go where the best facilities are, where the hest people are ~— and the finest people are in Hollywood. “To be the best pest-produc- tion studio in the world is im- possible here, because the best work ends up in L.A.’ Turner says a realistic goal for Pinewood is to continue to en- courage local producers and the local film industry to make movies that will one day be technically as good as the best American materi- al. “We will eventually be doing $100-million movies,’’ he says, “when the big ones are costing $2 billion.” So far, his studio couldn’t sur- vive if it had to depend solely on Canadian work.
