NEWS photo Mike Wakefield Santa gets some help from his N. Shore friends JUST AS in the fairy tale, Christmas wouldn’t be ar- riving here on the North Shore if Santa hadn’t had a little help from his friends. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter But in this case,.Santa is the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau and the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund and the friends are the hundreds of schools, church groups, volunteers and community groups whose work is helping to put food on the table and presents under the tree for seme 900 North Shore families this year. A quick last-minute count as the Christmas bureau closed its doors on Thursday revealed that North Vancouver residents have put in 680 applications (up from 654 last year) for hampers, toys and food vouchers, according to bureau coordinator Pat Orr. In West Vancouver, the ap- plications number 220, down from fast year’s 250 — ‘but we're not finished yet,"’ says Ruth Stout, executive officer for the Santa Claus fund. As in years past, this Christmas the community has put in a lot of effort, creativity and generosity to brighten Christmas for everybody. The teachers, support staff and administration at Sentinel Sec- ondary School, for example, managed to raise in the school’s first-ever auction $4,351 to help the West Vancouver Santa Claus fund purchase food vouchers. Sentinel principal Peter Lefaivre calls it a ‘double give situation,’ where the staff donated goods and services to the auction and then in turn purchased those of a col- leaguc. Up for the bidding at the Nov. 30 auction were almost 50 items ranging from a murder mystery SEASON §, + TO SHARE dinner and a hot-tub party to a day of salmon fishing and “three men and a pick-up truck."" Other North Shore schools have pitched in by gathering donations and making their own hampers for families. Carson Graham stu- dents and staff will be delivering 50 hampers to the North Shore Neighbourhood House where they will in turn find a needy home. Businesses have also made large contributions to the Christmas ef- fort, says Orr. Although the weather worked against them, Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge twice ran their ‘‘dollar days”? deal in which $1 from every ticket or pass purchased went to the two Christmas funds. Meanwhile, the Lonsdale Quay Market brought the Vancouver Symphony to the Lonsdale Quay market to play Christmas music, while volunteers from the North Shore Credit Union (whose bran- ches also take donations) collected money from the audience. In West Vancouver, a man makes toys each year for the children on the North Shore. Meanwhile, the Highlands Church ladies were busy making quilts and dressing dolls to put in cradles handmade by their hus- bands. Firefighters in both West and North Vancouver have also helped generously this year by collecting donations at the firehalls and delivering them to the funds as well as to some families. The list of Santa’s ‘‘heipers’’ this year is too lengthy to give credit where credit is duc. But their work will be needed once again mext year because, unlike the fairy tale, Santa’s work on the North Shore is never done. = Central Motcr Service 350 Lower Levei Rd. f 1012 Deep Cove Rd.
