Historians say that the very first record we have of art is drawings made over 35,000 years ago — in the late Palaeolithic Period — on the walls of caves, mostly in France and Spain. They say these paintings are too sophisticated to have been the first generation of cave art, they are merely the first yet discovered. Further, art historians say these works of art had, among other uses, a powerful decorative pur- pose; our ancestors felt the need to bring beauty into their homes. In this, all homeowners share. All cultures, in all ages, have made their homes places where their understanding of beauty has been at least as important as the building’s function. Any dwelling will keep out the rain, but a beautiful home helps guard the soul, Through history, we have used almost everything to make our homes beautiful: paint, sculpture, fine wooden furnishings, ceramics, mosaics, and, beginning in the western world in the 17th century, paper. Paper quickly became the standard for decorating walls, even in the most aristocratic homes. By the middle of the 18th cen- tury, wallpaper manufacturing had become a thriving industry, and English manufacturers ex- ported large quantities all over the world. And by the early 19th cen- tury, advanced printing tech- niques, coupled with the devel- opment of the ‘‘endless’* sheet, resulted in widespread use of wallpaper by all classes of society. Early wallpaper designs follow- ed the contemporary styles of woven, embroidered or printed textiles of the time. The first pop- ular wallpaper designs in England were heraldic or flora}, although one could opt for a more refined design, resembling the stitchery CANADA popular during the Tudor period. However, for the most part, early wallpaper design remained rather uninspired, with manufac- turers concentrating on improving production processes. One notable exception was the work of William Morris, an artist in the mid-to-late 19th century. Morris concentrated on reforming the arts of design, creating exceptionally detailed designs for decoration, such as the famous ‘‘Pimpernel’’ wallpaper. But it was not until the 1950s that printing technology allowed an overall improvement in the standards of wallpaper design and color. Since then, wallpaper has become second only to paint as the preferred home decorating medium, and hundreds of pat- terns, colors and designs available worldwide make wallpaper as ver- satile as the user's imagination.
