£ iad Print sales to benefit diabetes foundation A CANADIAN artist and the B.C. chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation are fishing for funds to beat a disease that currently af- fects 1.5 miflion Canadians. James Lumbers visited Bilton’s Art Centre in North Vancouver on Thursday, Oct. 5 as part of a Lower Mainland tour to promote his painting Side by Side. The work depicts a young boy on his way to fish at his Gramps’ favorite fishing hole. Proceeds from the sale of the specially- commissioned limited edition prints of the painting will be used to fund diabetes research. The promotion is the first fund- raiser for the B.C. chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation since its inaugural meeting held Sept. 21 in Vancouver. “We want families with diabetic children, individuals, cerporations, anyone and everyone in the pro- vince, to know that we’re officially operating,’’ said Leslie Pope, president of the B.C. chapter. “Our main function is to raise funds to support the search for a cure and we are hopeful Mr. Lumbers’ effort on our behalf will be supported. We’re confident his talent will help us in our task,*’ she saii. For each print ordered before Oct. 3i, $50 will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of B.C. The picture is one of Lumbers’ unique memory paintings of a rural scene ‘‘haunted’’ by the ghost-like images of the people who used to frequent them. The young boy travelling down a well-worn path to the fishing hole is seen pausing to reflect on past memories and it’s clear that his Gramps is by his side. Lumbers’ stepson has diabetes. According to the foundation, juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes is a serious disease which currently affects 1.5 million Cana- Gians and this figure is increasing by six per cent per year. Its complications include heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage, kidney failure and amputations. Diabetes is also the leading cause of blindness each year. The Lumbers’ prints are avail- able on the North Shore at Bilton’s Art Centre and Bernadette’s Gal- leries in North Vancouver and the Arnbleside Gallery in West Van- cover.
