46 - Wednesday, September 14, 1988 - North Shore News LOCALS GRADUATE FROM WOW PROGRAM TWENTY-FOUR North Shore students recently graduated from the 1988 Work Orientation Workshop (WOW) project. The three North Vancouver WOW project groups held a joint graduation ceremony and _ recep- tion to honor those participants who successfully completed the nine-week employment/lifeskills program. The North Vancouver Recre- ation Commission, North Shore Continuing Education Services and Deep Cove-Dollarton Community Programs Society each operated a WOW project in their area. Each program enabled 10 youths to par- ticipate in a developmental learn- ing experience, thus providing them with the tools necessary to access greater Opportunities in to- day's labor market. Last spring, the three local non-profit organizations received grant funding from Canada Employment and immigration to develop the summer program for potential early school leavers aged 15 to 18 years. This is the second year the project has been im- plemented in North Vancouver. Employers representative of the North Shore labor force offered job placements. Ideally, students were encouraged to return to school. Response from last year’s WOW project is encouraging. Feedback from participants, parents, employers and the community points to a resounding success. The final graduation event, held at Lynn Valley Recreation Centre, was attended by parents, employers, sponsors and focal pol- iticians. Mary Collins, MP for Capilano, acting mayor for the District of North Vancouver Ernie Crist and North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks were on hand to congratulate the students.
