30 - Friday, August 12, 1988 - North Shore News eniors SENIORS INTERESTED in mak- ing all types of crafts are en- couraged to attend the Craft Circle at the North Shore Neighbourhood House. Right now the members of the Craft Circle are busy making items to sell at the North Shore Neigh- bourhood House’s annual bazaar to be held Oct. 26. Tables are available for rent at the bazaar for a fee of $10. Members of the circle can par- ticipate in the group projects or they can bring their own items to work on. Types of crafts made include fabric paintings, rug hooking, quilting, knitting and Christmas decorations. Workshops on new projects are taught by Ruth Attfield, who wel- comes any person interested in showing or giving a workshop on new craft ideas. She is also looking Students can have chance to study abroad INTERCULTURE CANADA, the country’s leading intercultural ex- change organization, has launched its 10th annual recruitment cam- paign for students, aged 15 to 18, interested in studying abroad for one full school year. This not-for-profit, charitable organization encourages young people to join its yearly class of in- ternational students by planning, as of today, the educational adventure of a lifetime — in any one of 30 different countries. Denise Otis, the coordinator for Interculture Canada’s Sending Program, continues to marvel at the results of such an exchange. ‘July is the month many of our students return,’’ she explains, “and again they’ve come home with such a wealth of knowledge, skills and first-hand experiences. I just wish all students were aware of the possibility to study abroad.”’ Placements in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Brazil, among others, are the organization’s current priority. These countries have a schoo! cal- endar which begins in the winter, making it necessary for students to apply to these countries by September 25. Departure for these winter destinations will take place between January and March 1989, depending on the country. “It’s an opportunity not to be missed,’’ concludes Otis. ‘‘Not on- ly do our students develop more self-confidence through the experi- ence, but by living with a carefully chosen host family, they also get a teal and lasting taste of life in a completely different part of the world, which is an education in itself.’ Interculture Canada, a member of AFS Intercultural Programs, is part of the world’s largest network of international student exchange programs operating in over seventy countries. Participation fees are comparable to the amount normal- ly spent on an adolescent over an tl-month period. Financial assistance is available.
