Press council
directors named

THE B.C. Press Council has
elected two new professional direc-
tors representing newspapers and
re-elected two directors repre-
senting the public.

They will serve two-year lerms.

The new directors are Dan F,
Doucette, publisher of the
Kelowna Daily Courier, and Roy
Nagel, editor of the Prince George
Citizen.

They rcplace Gary Oldfield,
publisher of the Vernon Daily
News, and Brian MacDonald,
former editor of the thrice-weekly
Richmond Review.

Re-elected public directors are
L.J. Wallace of Victoria, who is
also vice-chairman of the council,
and Joanne Leslie of West Van-
couver.

Continuing directors, who have
a year left to serve, are Iris
Christison, publisher of the Prince
Rupert Daily News; Murray
McMillan, editorial writer at the
Vancouver Sun; Joe Morris of
Victoria. and Jean Turnbull of
Vancouver. Ian Greenwood of
Vancouver is council chairman.

Press council directors hear and
adjudicate on complaints from the
public about newspapers and
complaints from newspapers about
the conduct of individuals and in-
stitutions towards the press.

The council aims to preserve
freedom of the press, act as a me-
dium of understanding between
press and public and encourage
high journalistic standards. It
makes representations to gov-
ernment on press-related matters.
