Seymour’ standings boat safety THE CANADIAN Boating Feder- ation launched its new 10-lesson Mini Canadian Boating Course for home study to coincide with Na- tional Boating Week, which began May 30 and runs to June 7. The course has been designed for use by anglers, canoeists, hunters, youth and first-time boat owners. “This course is directed to peo- ple who are occasional! boaters and the inexperienced,”’ said Canadian Boating Federation executive director Vic Waring. ‘‘Education is the key to safe water activities. Our federation has for 30 years dedicated itself to awareness, education, prevention, safety and sport on Canada’s waterways.’’ The 10 lessons cover a wide range of topics including gov- ernment regulations, the language of boating, lights, collision regula- tions, rules for fog or poor visibili- ty, charts and buoyage systems, the compass, weather, seamanship, emergency situations, flags, custom requirements and gencral safety afloat. ‘The fundamentals of water ac- tivities such as scuba diving, dinghy sailing, water skiing and swimming are also covered. The $15 course includes an in- terim and final exam which are mailed to the Canadian Boating Federation for scoring. Mistakes are corrected and upon completion of the final exams with a 75 per cent mark, the student will receive a Mini Canadian Boating Course Certificate and boat decal. Additionally, those who are in- terested may obtain for $6 (to cover cost of insurance) member- ship in the Canadian Boating Fed- eration for the balance of the boating season.
