WV HONGRS GERTIE TODD Pageant receives leader bouquet NORTH VANCOUVER’S Gertie Todd received a civic medal for 35 years of work with the Miss North Shore Pag- eant recently and vowed to return for a 50-year medal. How do I get a gold,’’ she asked the North Vancouver City mayor and council at the award ceremony. During her 35 years with the pageant, Todd has seen a myriad of changes. “‘I find our young people are more progressed in awareness and taient,’’ she says. Years ago when a younger Todd first became involved with the event, local social climates were much different. Some changes, she confesses, require more time to adjust to than others. “It’s the single parents that I'm learning to deal with,’’ admits Todd: Working with young people is like a tonic for Todd, whose hectic schedule of pageant-related events keeps her busy. Right now she is working on the Miss Teen Vancouver Lower Mainland Pageant before starting on the North Shore event. “~ have a two-week rest and then I’m off,’’ she laments good- naturedly. Her work with the pageant has given Todd a new outlook on life — a younger outlook. “These .young people are so alive. I.can understand them better than someone my own age. I ask them — [ suggest — maybe they could be here at this or that time.”’ Todd’s lively spirit and dedica- tion to work has rubbed off on the people she calls ‘her girls’ — the young women she coaches for the beauty pageants. As a Christmas present, Todd and a group of her girls visited the extended care ward at Lions Gate Hospital to bring a little cheer to the patients. “‘They just loved it,’? Todd says of her charges. ‘‘They were just waiting to go around to the hospi- tal and share...They (patients) were just delighted. “That's good for the patients and that’s good for my girls,’’ she says. Todd accepted the award with aplomb, crediting everyone except herself. “Afterwards Jack (Loucks, mayor of North Vancouver City) said ‘You didn’t even accept the award on your own.’’’ “T couldn't do this without sup- port,’’ she says of her work. “I accepted the award but I did say that many other people were a part of that award.” But she vows to continue her work with local.youth for as long as possible. ‘‘You’re not going to get rid of me until ’'m in a wheelchair,’’ she laughs.
