18 - Wednesday, December 17, 1986 - North Shore News APPROXIMATELY 70 athletes representing six Special Olympics sports clubs throughout the Lower Mainland gathered at the Ron An- drews Pool recently to cheer their teammates at the Second Annual North Shore Special Otympics (NSSO) swim meet. Chena Swim Club ran the meet and officiated together with- other North Shore organizers. Participating groups included the Burnaby Athletic Club (coach, Isabell Cavallin), Coquitlam Special Olympics (coach, Rick Gauer), North Shore Special Olympics (coach, Tammy Pro- cotor), Richmond Special Olym- pics (coach, Mike Burdett), Surrey Special Olympics (coach, Nancy Campbell) and Vancouver Special Olympics (coach, Fran Verbakel). Tere Pallant, North Shore vol- unteer coordinator, reported a “good response’? from the com- munity and parents for volunteers with about 50 people answering the call to help with officiating, tally- ing results and presenting the lun- cheon. The meet was officially opened by B.C. Special Olympics (BCSO) president Tony Pugh. Present during the morning’s events were North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks, program coordinator BCSO Maureen Hollis, and two members of the Kinsmen Club. Finishes by North Shore athletes in the 25-metre freestyle events in- cluded Gordie Jillings taking first (12 and under); Dayna Stevenson, first (women 12 and under); Chris Upgeard, second (men 15 to 16); Colleen Sound, first (women 15 to 16); Joe Barker, third (men 17 to 19); Lorraine McLatchie, second (women 17 to 19); Michael Chisholm, first (men 20 to 25 — heat 1); Fred Collins, first, Warren Callin, second, and Cal Bran- dolini, third (men 20 to 25 — heat 2); Susan McCabe, third (women 20 to 25 — heat 1); Leslie Leo, se- cond (women 20 to 25 — heat 2); Sara Barker, third (women, 26 and over) — heat 1); Nancy Wilson, second, Beverley Biggs, third (women 26 and over — heat 2). The women’s relay team com- posed of Leslie Leo, Susan Mc- Cabe, Lorraine MecLatchie and Dawn Mende placed second in the women's freestyle relay. The awards ceremony was chaired by North Shore Special Olympics chairman Gerry Keast. Ribbons were awarded by Ald. Ernie Crist (North Van. District), who said in his opening remarks, “Your enthusiasm is an inspiration “to us all.”” The NSSO committee organizing the meet included Ann McCabe, coordinator; Tammy Proctor, North Shore swim coach; Gerri Skuse, head of luncheon commit- tee; Tere Pailant, volunteer coor- dinator; Jeannette Marston, facili- ties and awards; Phyllis Wilson, invitations; and Martha Baker, publicity. Special acknowledgement for support was given to the B.C. Lions Alumni, Chena Swim Club, B.C. Special Olympics, Ron An- drews Pool, Overlander Meats and Scotch Bakery.
