8 - Sunday, August 31, 1986 - North Shore News Mailbox. ~ NOT CARS US Dear Editor: Regarding motorists who insist in parking their cars in & bus zone: One of the worst areas is Lons- dale Ave. and 1Sth St. There are three banks situated on three cor- ners with a bus stop in front of them. Many citizens especially senior people have to use the public transportation, myself included. An incident occurred Friday, Ju- ly 11, approximately 5 p.m., when the northbound bus reached this corner the driver had to stop along side the yellow line which meant passengers found it difficuli to step from the fower bus step to the Pavement because the bus zone had cars parked in it. zones for buses _ This is a very frequent oceur- renee, Speaking to the driver of a grey-colored panel van he said his friend was in the T.D. bank. The friend returned to the truck so it was a case of explaining about why they should not stop in a bus zone. The answer from the friend was, “That's no problem. They (mean- ing the bus driver) crowd us off the road.’ A poor reason for parking in a bus zone. Fortunately so far nobody has been injured getting off the buses in the middle of the road. THL VOICE OF AOMTH AND WEST VANCOUVER 1139 Lonsdale Ave., N.V. 986-1337 SUNDAY ¢ WEDNESDAY + FRIDAY INCREASED HARMONY Less gov't, less trouble Dear Editors: In recent months we have seen several instances of politi- cians who appear to be involved in conflict of interest situations. Whilst this is not just a recent phenomenon, it is certainly a growing one, and the reason for this growth should be exam- ined. It is not because politicians today are any richer than they used to be — in fact, ni vst will go to great lengths to tell you how necessary it is for them to vote themselves another raise at the earliest opportunity. The reason we are hearing more reports of conflicts is because of the increasing tendency of government to in- terfere with commerce, and as long as politicians believe they have not only the right but the duty to single out and reward individual corporate — entities, the danger of conflict will con- tinue. Subsidies to favored in- dustries should be ended. Cor- porate bail-ovts harm the con- sumer in the long run. Libertarians know that by limiting government, the possi- bility of conflict of interest will be reduced. A move in this direction would do much to create har- mony in the market place and lift a cloud of suspicion that has done much to harm the careers of several sincere and well- meaning politicians who have fallen victim to a trap, mainly of their own making.
