Awards and prizes received after May 23, 1985 that took the form of an employment benefit or were connected with a business that you worked for, will not be eligible for the $500 exemption for prizes for achievement. During the 1983 and 1984 tax years, awards of this type were ac- cepted by Revenue Canada as qualifying for this exemption. The tax department had to accept them, after a court ruled in favor of a taxpayer who claimed the ex- emption in November of 1983, “AWARDS AND PRIZES” Since then, employers have used “awards’’ and ‘‘prizes’? as a means of giving employees a tax- free benefit.
