Refuge from Edinburgh rain

ALTHOUGH we didn’t know it, as we left York,

we also left the last decent weather we'd see until:

we returned to Canada.

The trip to Edinburgh
from York is only a couple
of hours by train. By the
time we reached Edinburgh
we were in the midst of one
of the most severe electrical
storms I’ve seen since I left
Alberta. The rain was ac-
companied by a good dose
of Scotch Mist and visibility
was zilch.

I might have known we
were in trouble when it took
an hour waiting for a taxi in
the train station, especially
since it was raining almost as
hard inside as it was in the
Streets. They’re going to
have to hire a roofer one of
these days.

With the weather as it was
I didn't want to commit us
to a tour - on our own we

Instead, we caught a city’
bus:-to Edinburgh Castle.
Because seeing the castle in-
volves a lot of walking out-
doors, we didn’t do it

s. justice. Sue was captivated
One’ by the _pet'cémetery just over

the wall. She was somewhat
horrified at the tiny-room ..°

Scots, gave birth to James.
She figured it was a poor
show to stuff a queen in
what's little better than a
closet, at such a time.

Edinburgh Castle is at the
top of what is termed the
Royal Mile. Although I’ve
visited Edinburgh several
times I had never walked
the famous ‘‘mile’’ which
terminates at the other royal
castle, Holyrood House (the
Queen’s official residence)
and I had vowed to do it.

Holyrood House has been
splendidly restored. Guided
tours leave the main en-
trance every few minutes -
don’t try walking through
yourself - you'll get stopped
in a helluva rush. The guides
are knowledgable (if you can
handle sometimes broad
Scots accents) and are
generally retired: military
men. ;

many showers as you.like,”’

water and clean towels.
