worth the risks

ave you ever wondered about the risks in-
volved in buying other people’s unused

airline tickets?

If you look in the
classified ads - travel section
- of any newspaper you’re
apt to see tickets for sale at
“reduced price’? or ‘$200
o.b.0.”’ and are being sold
by individuals not agencies.

Obviously, the individual
has purchased a non-refun-
dable cut-rate seat and is try-
ing to get his money back.
Or at least some of it.
. Often, the ticket
one-way portion. This can
result from any number .of
emctional reasons but when
you consider the price of a
one-way, full-fare economy
ticket against the price of a

“seat sale” or other promo-.
tional ‘round-zrip fare you |

can ‘see. how. the guy who

never incnds to return might,

buy the two-way fare. By
peddling the return half he
-can save himseif quite a bit.

Next comes the “what
if?” part of the risk. What if
you are injured or killed on
the flight? Since you are vic-
lating the contract would the
airline be liable for compen-
sation? That one might have
the lawyers rubbing their
hands in clee.

Ona smaller scale, what
your bags’ decide to take 2
separate vacation? If your
ticket reads ‘‘Smith’’ and
your bags read ‘‘Jones’’ the
airline might begin io doubt
’ your honesty. Would they be

example out of you? I'll bet

the newspapers would have a

lot of fun with that one!

their necks trying to recover
your two-suiter. What's it to
them? They've: got no con-

rives at the airport in drag,
bearing passports made out
to Tom, Dick and Harry?

recently in another publica-
tion that in some countries
you can get better exchange
on currency than you can on
travellers’ - cheques. Would
you comment on this?

ANSWER: It’s true
enough - but risky. First of
all carrying cash is a walking
invitation to a mugging.
Nowadays you can get mug-
ged on your front steps but
you won't be carrying a
trip’s supply of dollars.

When I say doilars, 1
mean American. Foreign
countries doesn’t get one bit
excited about cur Canadian
bucks.

Next, dealing in cash often
indicates the black market.
Again, risky. Even’ if your
dealer. is trustworthy: (and
how does a foreigner know?)
he could get busted right in
the middle of the transaction
and both of you could be in
