Ad - Friday, August 31, 1984 - North Shore News Residents hit Lynnmour plans A SMALL delegation from the Lynnmour Residents Association appeared before North Van- couver District Council Monday to address sen- Sitive issues relevant to their community. Acting as spokesman for the group, Pat Neufeld read a brief to the mayor and council outlining their con- cerns over development in the Vote in anger Lynnmour area. According to the brief, residents were strongly op- posed to any additional multi-family units in Lynn- mour. It also gave sugges- tions for improvements in the operation of the Premier Street Landfill and objected to proposed housing expan- sion north of the cemetery. Regarding the landfill con- cern, the paper said that the implementation of an_ ex- panded recycling program Strictly personal by Bob Hunter REMEMBER, with fondness, the brief regime of Joe Clark. He was sort of like John Paul I, the ‘‘September Pope.”’ We hardly got to know him, did we? There he was. And then he was gone. As it turns out, Clark’s disastrous decision to call an election after a merely technical defeat in the House, was almost sensible politics compared to John Turner’s clumsy grab for the golden ring. Joe Clark’s brief stint in power made an impression on me as a Canadian for the simple reason that for the first time in most of my adult life, 1 felt like I was a part of the country, not just a poor cousin living in a satellite state. lf the Liberals deserve punishing for nothing else, they deserve it for betraying: the ideal of--Gonfederation time and time again. The truth is, Canada has a system that is defined as federal but has strongly built- in centralist tendencies. Ottawa has constantly tned, as George Woodcock notes, ‘‘to recreate on Cana- dian soil a replica of the unlamented British Empire.”’ The very thing that makes this country worth loving is the regional spirit of defiance which has cemented Cana- dian politics into the mould of an eternal battle between federai and provincial forces. It is, like most things, an accident of history. The ill- written British North America Act was so lamely constructed that it in- advertently left the provinces free to tack in the lee of Ot- tawa, as it were. Thanks to luck, a long str- ing of court decisions, and he flywheel of regional am- itions, our provincial eovernments enjoy Something surprisingly close so real autonomy within the The Gripper (ball point pen) 49° Young Americans 22 Cailbre Yogurt 175g Appie. People who don’t recognize that in ter- ritorial terms Canada is ac- tually the second most suc- cessful imperial power in the world-after Russia-astonish me. Of course, size isn’t the issue. Our real glory is that we are free to enjoy two iden- tities — our regional and then our federal status. To be able to vote to send people to not one but two distinct, in- dependent legislatures — ina world where most people don’t even get half a vote — is a blessing, absolutely. It was all the more treasonable, therefore, that the Liberals were content to rule from the bastions of On- tario and Quebec, dominating the rest of the country by force majeure, riding roughshod over regional wisdom. Hey, the natives do know best! This brings me back to Joe Clark. Suddenly, after decades, 11 seemed, of being location. and put your this Labour Day! And be treated lke a citizen, rather than a poten- ual rebel colonist. Joe opened the window facing West. It was like a breath of sunhght, to coin a phrase. Tories were seeking inputs from a host of dif- ferent far Westerners. And, gee, that felt good. Then, boom, the roof fell in. Keith Davey was back in power. We were out in the cold as per usual. So far, this election is mak- ing me feel really good about Canada again. 1 mean, we were involved in nothing less than an unapprehended in- ~ surrection. Under almost any other system, we’d have had to shoot the rascals to get rid of them. But let’s not lose perspec- tive. In a revolution — and we are nearing the climax of one — there can be no half measures. The despots have to be swept completely from the board. The historic task before us, folks, isn’t just to defeat the Liberals, it is, to depose, humiliate and exile thermm—Iq scatter salt on the ruins of their campaign offices. In closing, Neufeld urged regular and scheduled con- sultation with the Associa- tion and with the Lynnmour Community School Council in future District dealings with proposals for their area.
