A6 - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News BE editorial page Se Good idea killed The decision by B.C.’s new education minister, Jack Heinrich, to wind up the Sager Commission on school administrative costs three months ahead of its scheduled repor- ting date smacks of using a sledgehammer to swat a fly. According to the ministry, the saving in money would appear to be of the order of $30,000 — hardly the tiniest drop in the ocean of the government’s multi-billion dollar deficit. Mr. Heinrich says the job will now be completed by ministry staff and the interim report of the two-man commission, which conducted hearings for almost three months, will not be released to the public. The commission, headed by former West Vancouver School Board chairman Mark Sager, was set up by former education minister Bill Vander Zalm. Its terms of reference were to examine the costs of school district administrations and recom- mend ways in which those costs could be reduced — by administrative streamlining and possibly, in some cases, the amalgama- tion of school districts. To many taxpayers the objective seemed to be a laudable one. The commissioners were independent pro- bers, both with intimate personal experience of the workings of the B.C. school system. There was every reason to expect they would have shed useful light on opportunities for economizing. Now, taxpayers will never know even their interim findings. Mr. Heinrich is apparently charged with eliminating all vestiges of the sometimes tumultuous Vander Zalm regime in the education field. It's a pity one of Mr. Vander Zalm’s better ideas is being thrown out in the process. Hush-up law Secrecy is one of the most jealously guard- ed privileges of government, because the less the public knows, the less it can criticize. So North Van City residents shouldn't get too excited about council's new Access to infor- mation bylaw. The public is unlikely to share any more juicy municipal secrets than at pre- sent — its only consolation being that future secrets will be legal secrets. {OR VOOR OF RENT DS ADD WERT VANDOUIVER sunday news north shore news Display Advertising Classified Advertising Newsroom 980-0511 986-6222 985-2131 Circulation 986-1337 1139 Lonsdale Ave . ROGER WORTH WHY ARE Canadians so afraid to help themsleves, and the rest of their country- men (and women), when it comes to spending their hard-earned cash? That question deserves considera- tion by every consumer as purchasing picks up and the recession (hopefully) passes into history. What's more, we've just proven that buying Cana- dian, rather than foreign- made goods, is really possi- ble. Dear Brian. With a little effort, we could keep things that way. The big payoff. of course, is jobs for the nation’s 1.6 million unemployed, to say nothing of a reduced unemployment insurance bill, which at present sur- passes $8-billion per year. Here are a few ways Cana- dians can help themselves: © Shop around, and look hard for “Canadian made” labels. In many cases, retailers are supporting the government's Shop Cana- dian program and merchan- dise is readily identifiable. Other regions have similar self-help programs that make it easy to puchase locally-made products. Still, there are some goods that only carry a small Cana- dian made label. Spending a little me to find that marker can pay big dividends. Naturally, we're not sug- gesting that consumers should pay exorbitant prices or accept shabby goods. But in many cases, the Canadian product is as good, if not bet- ter, than the import and the price may be less. * How about a vacation in Canada? Why not try a Canadian resort, visit another province or region or check out the nightlife in one of our larger cities? Going south during a cold winter is understandable, but in summer, the glories and diversity of Canada should be considered. Besides, paying a 25 per cent premium for U.S. vacation dollars is expensive, and don't forget those heavy tolls on most of the major high- ways in the United States. e Buy something simple, like a Canadian book. e Consider a home renova- tion project. With interest rates at relatively low levels, now may be the time to add an extra room, a dormer or refurbish the basement. without doubt, increased home-building and renova- tions have an immediate im- pact on the unemployment problem. Don't forget, check for Canadian-made materials. While these are only a few of the ways we can help ourselves, you get the idea: by changing our buying habits and actually seeking out Canadian-made products and services, we would all be better off. If all of this sounds like flag waving so be it. At least the red and white flag ts made in Canada.
