A8 - Wednesday, April 27, 1983 - North Shore News SE naib Irresponsible press? Dear Editor: I am not familiar enough with Canadian previous budget leaks but the follow- ing in British politics throws a light on the changing at- mosphere. In the 1940s, Hugh Dalton (a highly intellectual man and had been a University don) who was entering the House of Commons said to a very long standing journalist friend that he was making a threepenny reduction in the Income Tax Rate. Never before had a_ threepenny change been made. The changes always had been in units of sixpence. In giving this information he thought it would enable his friend to be first with the news but it would not be published before announced in Parliament. However, the friend phon- ed it though immediately and one of the London even- ing newspapers, the Evening News or the Evening Stan- dard flooded the London Streets with the news before it was announced in the Chancellor's speech. Dalton, a high principled man, came on the radio that night to announce his inten- tion to resign — which was accepted by Attlee, the Prime Minister. In the 1930s, J.H. Thomas, who together with Ramsay Macdonald as former leaders of the Labour Party were still joining in a so-called National Party, resigned when a budget leak was disclosed. Baldwin with tears in his eyes (perhaps crocodile) described the faithful servies of J.H. Thomas. I believe that some thought should be given to the position of responsible journalists - and that in the national interests they should think before reveal- ing something like this so- called leak. It could cause a great flurry on stock ex- changes financial undertak- ings by being revealed Arms race does involve Canada Dear Editor: Everyone is talking about Gandhi but very few people are doing anything. Sure Gandhi talked about love, non-violence and honesty, but he also did a lot more than just talk. He organized people to revolt against the British rule so that India could have her in- dependence. Gandhi made the people of India realize that they could have power over the British, that they could effect change and that their goals were worth devoting their lives to. Vancouverites (and Canadians) sit back and watch the movie “Gandhi” and think “What an in- credible man to be able to achieve so much through advocating non-violence”, but we aren't taking Gan- dhi’s messages _ scriously enough and applying them to our society. We have a Prime Minister who would rather toe Reagan's political line than set an international example of non-violence by refusing to participate in the manufacturing and testing of nucicar arms It is time to clean’ up our own back-yard instead of passing off our responsibilitics by saying that Canada 1sn't involved an the arms race and that ts just the US and USSR Trudeau has involved Canadians by manufacturing components of the MX and cruise omuassiles Trudeau wants to involve Canadians by testing the cruise missile in Alberta We must reahzed that this is oa dangerous THE WALL STREET JOURNAL for day of Qublication dotivery to home a office in most aronas 8 G&A Turner News Distribution 922-5338 precedent to set and we must do more than just go to movies and talk about how other people organize. The whole atmosphere reveals a tremendous change from the 1930s. The British people were angered and felt duped about the convention which existed between the press and the Royal Family not to disclose the Mrs. Simpson position with the Duke of Windsor. Since then, the Royal Family has been under con- stant prying and Princess sete whilst pregnant was otographed and publiciz- ed in this way. Surely she should have been allowed if she wanted to bathe whilst pregnant to do it without publicity in the same way as any other young woman.
