C2 - Sunday, February 6, 1983 - North Shore News ‘Real woman’ not afraid of commies TORONTO (UPC) — Adrienne Potts is leaving with a letter from the prime minister, a knapsack full of maps, 22 sponsors and a finely-tuned Yamaha 550 XT motorcycle on her one- woman journey around the world. The 28-year-old Lindsay, Ont., woman has written to_ knows will carry with her. Ms. Potts admits she intends to make her journey “as high-profile as possible.” She will file bi-weekly reports back to CKO Radio and the Toronto Star, a system which she regards as a built-in safety device as well as a log, because she someone will be most of the nearly 50 countries she plans to visit astride her bike during her expecting to hear from her regularly. Her lengthy preparation year-long odyssey, learning that the Soviet Umion is not keen on her plans to travel alone, Afghanistan wants no part of her and Moslem countries could give her a hard time. She is nevertheless determined to go. “A woman has to do what a woman has to do,” the husky-voiced Ms. Potts says. “I know what to expect geographically. Culturally, 'm prepared to learn.” Ms. Potts is particulary looking forward to Africa and says she will be relieved to be through Central and South America, the first leg of her journey which starts Monday with a plane trip from Toronto to Dallas. “My fantasy is that I'm rediscovering the world _again,” she says, .“Women haven't had a role in it before. But ve prepared for this trip. I've been working out for nine months and I'm as Strong as a bull.” Ms. Potts plans to cover more than 90,000 miles kilometers on her motor- cycle, not counting boats down the Nile to Cairo, to the United Kingdom from Calais, France and from Kuwait to Pakistan “to avoid Iran.” After taking a boat from Hong Kong to Tokyo, she will fly home to Van CoUuver.
