The three vignettes are held together by the direction and_— starring performances of Norman Slack, a well known local entertainer. But he starts off slow, as does the whole production. The first part is a scene from H.M.S._ Pinafore, which its memorable mainly for a solo by Cheryle Madeley as Josephine. An amusing between scenes performace with John Thomas as the Pirate King and David Irving as the Policeman who's “lot is not an ‘appy one” smooths the passage from on _ board H.M.S. Pinafore to Venice, scene of the Gondoliers. The audience is required to participate in the entr’act, which is performed in the aisles while the scene change is going on. so that by the ini Mikado a hit time Slack pops up again as the delightful but im- poverished Duke of Plaza- Toro, everybody is in the appropriate silly mood. Although the tempo picks up in this act, it is not until the hour long mini-Mikado that the show really gets going. The full cast comes together then to give a very enjoyable performance. Slack, who plays a sort of Basil Fawlty version of Ko- Ko the Lord Chief High Executioner, is at his best. But he is almost upstaged by fine performances from Diane Rex Turkington as Yum-Yum and Bob Wadden as Nanki-Poo. © For Gilbert and Sullivan fans, the G and S Gala is a chance for a quick flip through some of the favorites. But be warned. If the night is as hot as opening Monday. you'd be well advised to wear something cool. Tickets for the 8:00 p.m. show are available through VTC, CBO or at the door of Presentation House.
