IF OPENING NIGHT
audience reaction is
anything to go by,
Community Artists
production of Jesus
Christ Superstar
promises to be a big
success.

No less than a oe me
ovation grected ~

performance of the rock
opera at North Van Cen-
tennial Theatre Wednesday.
And, although some ex-
ception must be made for a
large number of friends and
family attending opening
night, the show certainly
deserves applause.

Stagestruck.
But fortunately, most of
them also have talent.

Sam Mancuso - who had a
bit part in VOA’s Man of
Lamancha last season - plays
Christ. And he’ definitely
emerges as the superstar of
the production.

He gives a brilliant per-
formance, has a fine voice,
and - believe it or not - he
even looks the part - tall,
bearded and gentle.

welcome, if black, comic
relief break from the tragic
trial scene.

With some unfortunate
exceptions, the large back
up cast is also

Poa biggest problem with
the production, and it is
certainly Judas’ (Brad
Stewart) downfall, is the
sound system.

Cast members wear lapel
mikes and if they move
suddenly, sing loud, or turn
their heads, you either have
to cover your ears with the
din, or strain to catch the
lost words.
