C2 - Sunday News, January 24, 1982 A pin is just a pin - right? Wrong! There are actually several different types of pins available to the fashion sewer, and most women who sew have their definite preferences, depending on the specific project. The well-known Dorcas pins enjoy great popularity because they snap instantly if struck by your sewing machine __ needle, thus avoiding the risk of damage to the shaft of your sewing machine. These basic pins come in three different NEW QUEEN for Job’s Daughters Bethel No. 9 in North Vancouver is Fiona Woods, who will be installed as queen January 23 at the Highlands United Church. There is also a color- headed pin, 1 1/16” in length. These pins are suitable for most cottons, woollens, and similar stable fabrics. Diadem white brass pins have been specially designed for use with fine, delicate fabrics. They are made of mickel plated brass, so are more flexible than the Dorcas pins. They're also available in three lengths: 9/16", 11/16", and 1 3/16". If you're working with knit fabrics, be sure to use ball point pins. They slip “bet- ween” the fibres of a knit where an ordinary pin would tend to “split” the fibres. They're also an excellent choice for Ultra-suede, as they won't leave any marks. Don’t blame weather It’s your own fault COLLEGE STATION, Texas(UPI) - A lot of people blame the weather for health problems when they themselves are responsible, according to a Texas A.& M, University meteorologist. Using the weather as a scapegoat means these people don't have to blame themselves for not taking proper care of themselves, says Dr. Dennis Driscoll, an expert on how the ;weather affects humans. Driscoll admits these are well-established links between health and ex- tremely hot or cold con- ditions “outside the comfort zone” but says there is no hard evidence to back up the belief that changes in the weather bring on such ailments as cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. “Where do you draw the line?” Driscoll asks. “If you catch a cold during winter weather, is it really weather or because you didn’t dress warm enough, or went to work when everyone was getting a cold?” Driscoll says the com- monly held notion that winter weather causes colds and flu may be explained by the fact that cool conditions compel people to spend more time inside tightly sealed buildings, what he calls “cryptoenvironments’”, where germs spread easily. “The classic example of this kind of thinking is what happened with polio,” he says. “For many years polio was thought to be caused by summer weather until scientists discovered the organism responsible lived in ah Pick Up And Pitch-In r a water and was picked up by people who went swimming outdoors. Very few people go swimming outdoors during winter, so few if any cases were reported during that time. Now, is that weather?” Another headache? Charlotte King has another headache. So what? you ask. Well, you may have to pack up your things and leave town, that’s what. In 1980, the 35-year-old Oregon resident, a chronic headache sufferer, noticed that her head pain grew very severe immediately before the eruption of Mount St. Helens. Since then, reports the current issue of Science Digest magazine, she has related her frequent twinges and pains to other im- OVER 120 COMBINATION FANS WITH & WITHOUT i?
