Dear Editor: My sincere and heartfelt thanks to all those who worked so hard in my campaign and to those who voted for me. I do not look on my re-election as just a personal victory. It was a clear demonstration that the voters want action from our District council on the key issues which I raised — affordable housing, a fairer System of taxation, protection of our en- vironment, adequate and affordable recreation facilities, community planning and rapid transit as well as accessibility to council. ‘Witch-hunters’ lost out In my campaign I stayed with the issues and avoided personalities, ideologies or party politics. ’'m sorry that I can’t say the same for others. Unable or unwilling to chalienge my record or debate the issues. they stooped to witch-hunting and smear ads and were even too cowardly to sign their names and identify them- selves. The fact that, in spite of this, my vote went up by some 30% and Betty Griffin came within 93 votes of being elected proved that the voters are a lot more intelligent than the witch- hunters give them credit for. I am sure that Betty Griffin, who emerged in this cam- paign as a staunch champion of community nceds, will be heard from again in the months ahead. I will, of course, continue to fight for the program on which I campaigned and I will continue to report back to the voters on what happens in our District council. Again, my thanks for your vote of confidence and you have my pledge that I will do my utmost to see that your confidence m me and my program is not misplaced. Ernic Crist Alderman North Van Dsstrict Campaign ‘never dirtier’ Dear Editor: Sincerest thanks to all who supported me at the polls last Saturday. For me, this election featured two dramatic departures from past contests. ; 1) For the first time candidates were supported by the leading provincial political parties. Is this the end of independent can- didates in the District of North Vancouver? 2)1 whave never ex- perienced a dirtier campaign in the three years of can- didacy. There was unsigned hate literature and Late night crank phone calls that would have done Joe McCarthy proud. Disagreement with one particular candidate brought such calls to my home from this lunatic fringe. But I will not be deterred from watchdogging your mayor and council. I charged your government with losing control of staff within the hall during the campaign and warned that it was going to cost you in the future. I said that the engineering dept. was mept in its management of the garbage dump and _inef- fective in the area of flood control and called for an. independent investigation of the flooding problems in Delbrook, Capilano Highlands and Upper Lynn Valley and finally, an in- vestigation into the leadership of this depart- ment. Stay tuned as your mayor gement. ; Let’s have an even bigger turn out next year!
