PHILADELPHIA (UPI) - A
study has indicated for the
first time that use of cocaine
by pregnant women, par-
ticularly during the first
three months, may result in
birth defects.

Results of the study, in
which laboratory mice were
injected with a relatively
small amount of the drug.
were published in the June
issue of the Journal
Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Ronald Gautien. a
pharmacology professor who
directed the study. said the
Temple University Hospital
research team could not “say
with 100 per cent certainty
that there is a correlation”
between an animal study and
people.

But he saad “there
cnough indication to caufion
women to the danger that
birth defects could occur tf
