A8-Sunday News, May 25, 1980 A 1963 Corvette was completely destroyed Tuesday night in a fire which spread to the roof of the car port under which it was parked in North Vancouver. Chief fire imspector for North Van City, George Tyson, said after inspecting the damage from the blaze at 275 East 13th. Street: “The fire was obviously started in the interior of the car and it was definitely torched.” At the time of speaking with the News he said he had no idea who had set light to the car but that RCMP are investigating the blaze. Police took away a wick which had been left in the filler mouth of the gas tank, although Tyson said he did not feel the wick was in- strumental in fhe interior blaze. However, he added: “The interior damage is so complete it is difficult to tell how it was started.” There was char damage to the roof of the car port. The car was owned by Kenneth Harrison, who lives at the address where the car was burned. Howe Sound not sacred for N. Van District council The fight to save scenic Gambier Island from open pit mining was carried a stage further last week by North Vancouver District council — which declined, however, to endorse motions urging the whole of Howe Sound to be declared a rec- reational area. The matter arose as council considered the report of the Electoral Areas Committee of the GVRD which had recommended that the GVRD_ Board “adopt a firm position with the provincial government calling for no new industnal development be permitted in the Howe Sound area, with the exception of additional wharfage at Squamish.” But both the GVRD Board and District council found this recommendaon too far- reaching. Alderman Peter Powell said he thought it was a “badly worded motion — to be quite frank it was damned stupid.” Alderman Ernie Crist said he would vote against continued exploration on ra Gambier, but Alderman John Lakes opposed the idea. He noted that Howe Sound had always been very active in mineral ex- ploration, dating back to the 19th century. “What do you mean by mining exploration? Prospecting, testing and test drilling? That's all that's happening there now — it May tur oul not to merit exploration,” Lakes suggested. “Everybody's in favor of sane development for Howe Sound. Well that just might include mineral exploration — it might provide jobs for one thing.” However, Alderman Crist pointed out that Gambier Island is not the whole of Howe Sound “Gambier should be put aside because of ts natural beauty — 1 should be taboo.” He also noted that West Vancouver council had supported such a motion. Alderman Gordon Rose said he would rather “act now than later” to stop the mining. It wouldnt make much sense, he indicated, to say tater “you've found the minerals bul we're not going to let you do anything with it. In the end council limited itself to instructing = its representative on the GVRD board, Alderman Powell, by a 3-2 vote to oppose the development of open pit mining on Gambier. Alderman Powell ab- sented himself from the council vote. Alderman Mary Segal was not present atthe meeting. Meanwhile, a_ parallel request by the recently in- corporated Save Howe Sound Society for a council resolution asking senior governments to declare Howe Sound a recreational area was also defeated on a 3-3 tie vote. In contrast to Dhistnect council's deciston, the Society's call for the preservation of the whole of Howe Sound as recreational had previously been en- dorsed by West Vancouver councu.
