C4-Sunday News, May 4, 1980 New roles and new rules for step-parents “My kids and I like to lick the baking bowl out after my new wife’s made cookies but she finds that distasteful, we just have different family habits but it sure is hard to work out,” says one father in a new blended family. “I can’t ask my friends, I can’t ask my parents, but I have a whole new set of complicated relationships and where do I go for help?”, cries one new step-parent. Today there are more and more remarriages taking place in which there are children of the first marriage and little of their previous experience equips those people to deal with the complexities of merging two North Shore Family Services has heard these cries from many Blended Families and our counsellors have been learning more about them. They are now offering groups so that people can learn from counsellors and each other different ways of dealing with the many demands of their new “blended family”. Many new step-parents find their step-children resent them at first and that’s normal. If they realize this and that it can take at least 18-months for them to begin to develop their own relationships with their stepchildren, step-parents won't take the reaction of the children so personally and will give themselves and the children time. Ex- changing information like this can be a great help to parents in a remarriage. They could also develop answers to - shall we live in my house or yours? - How do we manage the finances to support your children and their mother as well as mine and us?... . North Shore Family Services is offering “Blended Families Workshops’”’ meeting once a week for four weeks to learn some of the answers to these and many other questions. Lead by ai qualified leader, workshop members will share ideas with each other and gain the experience and support from being in a group of parents with similar experiences. Six or seven couples will form a workshop starting at the beginning of May. For those parents in “blended families” who would like to learn more over a longer period and so have a chance to develop a working relationship with the group, North Shore Family Services also offers a 12-week course. For more information on either of these courses call North Shore Family Services - 988-7128. “Happiness is adding more life to their years.” This was the theme of the Annual Meeting and Thank-You Luncheon for the North Shore Volunteers in Nursing and Rest Homes, held at St. David’s United Church recently.
