from 7:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
for the Association's annual
Skate-o-thon.

The Skate-o-thon is the
Association's major fund
raising event of the year,
which has the two-fold
purpose of raising money to
finance the seven-month
long hockey program for its
more than 350 participants
between the ages of six and
22, and to raise money to
help finance improvements
to the West Van Arena.

Once upon a time it was
thought that even though
other nations might use and
manipulate their athletes,
that we at least were still
above that stage. But no
more.

In the face of growing and
rampant nationalism and
professionalism the modérn
Olympics hung on, flawed
and imperfect, but stil there,
from 1896 onwards.

Through war, propoganda
and even murder, the games
stumbled, slipped and slid
forwards, offering that
elusive and distant goal of
the limitless reaches of the
human mind and body.

There was the ideal that
the individual could reach
beyond the confines of

the ever so temporary
political forces.

BEYOND REPAIR

No matter what the
outcome of the present
plots, the Games have been
damaged beyond repair, at
least for many generations.

A set of western games for
those countries of the ‘free’
world will be a shabby and
cheap imitation. Mind you,
political forces are by their
nature imitators and are
incapable of true inovation.
The new set of Games will
be a well scraped bone
thrown to the athletes who
will be cheated-out of the
years of struggle and
devotion. And you can rest
assured the politicians will
not offer to pay for the out of
pocket expenses. these
people voluntarily have
given up in striving for the
Olympics. ,

If these new games come
to pass you can rest assured
that they will be a total
propaganda package.

DOGS OF HATRED

As the hue and cry against
the Olympics increases, we
see radio stations and others
arranging plebicites against
the athletes being allowed to
compete in the Games. The
dogs of hatred and bigotry
are barking throughout the
land.

Even if the games. are
moved to a permanent site
such as Athens, the fact that
they have been manipulated
there by political force
negates any such move as
truly independant.

Nationalism can be a
damaging force. In T.H.
White’s marvellous story of
King Arthur, ‘The Once and
Muture King,’ King Arthur,
as a newly crowned ruler is
puzzling over nations and
war when Merlin says to
him:

‘I could never stomach
these nationaysts. The
destiny of man is to unite,
not divide. If you keep on
dividing you end up as a
collection of monkeys
throwing nuts at each other
out of separate trees.’
