But Barnes said the in-
cidence of plague may rise in
the United States as rural
areas are settled. Thus far in_
1979, there have been a °
dozen cases of human plague
and Barnes expects that
figure will rise by the end of
the year.

The United States has 12
to 25 cases each year,
generally confined to the
area between the Pacific and
Kansas, he said, with the
majority of cases occurring
in the Southwest.

“Plague is a strange
disease caused by one
organism, but with many
phases, itis highly adaptive,”
Barnes said in an interview,
“Tt is like sunburn where one
buy gets red, another gets
blisters and another gets
kidney problems.”
