As well, E. Fry has a residence for women. ' LOW SELF IMAGE . Vi herself attends sessions at Vancouver court twice a week. ‘Most incarcerated ‘women. have a low self- image,’” she says. ‘Often they have met up with some. fellow who has convinced them how grand he is, and many times it will be the man who is instrumental in getting the woman into this awkward situation.”’ However this state of affairs is improving—if you can call it an improvement. “It was only 10 years ago ' that the woman would be driving the car while the men were in robbing the bank. Now she’s in there helping them along spendidly. ‘*Part of that, of course, is women’s lib,’’ she says, “‘it’s quite true...’” Vi got involved personally with young people in conflict with the Jaw first when she took her 13 year old son to ‘show him the court system. It happened that the daughter of an old family friend was appearing on a drug charge. Vi invited her to live with her family for a time, to help her get off drugs. **Since then we have had a number of people come live with us from the institutions who have had drug prob- lems, and some have turned out very successfully.’’ Up until ‘recently Vi and her husband had not had anyone staying with them for the past year. However, last week Vi had a call from a friend in the interior, and it was arranged that a 16 year old native girl come stay with them. MORE CONCERN NEEDED The general public should be much more concerned about what is happening to juveniles, according to Vi. “Ht does no good to lock them up,”’ she says, “They just learn miore about crime | and how to do it better.”’ They can spot children at four and fiye who are going to be a. potential problem, she says. ‘‘This is when we should bé ‘spending. our time ‘and energies with children— ~- instead of waiting until they are 17 and 18 by which time it may be too late.” Born in Vancouver, living on the North Shore for the last 18 years, Vi did a \ot - of volunteer work prior to getting involved = with Elizabeth Fry, some five years ago. ‘ : In particular, she did a lot of political work. She is currently working as recept- ionist in the Capilano Return- ing Office. She is finding it extremely hard: many of the calls she deals with are from people | who are not on the voters’ list and want to know how to go about getting on it. **] would prefer a system whereby the individual ‘is _responsible for getting him- self on the voters’ list, as in - the States.”’ Because she is working in a. Returning Office, Vi says she isn’t supposed to express a political view publicly. However, she says she would certainly like to see more | women running politically. | ‘‘As women feel less and less that they must stay. at - home, they should get more involved | with their com- munity.’ TOTALLY INVOLVED One optimistic develop- ment is that volunteers, content six or seven years ago to lick stamps and stuff envelopes, are now demand- ing to get totally involved 2-106 E. 14th St. N.
