page 8 - Be ecomber 28,1977 : - North Shore News Ere. Ay BEM IDT e ay aoe | Dear Editor: | oe It. was interesting to read in the ‘‘News’’ of December 18 that the Dist. of N.V. has acquired 7 acres of parkland for the cost of $50,000. Apparently, Don Bell, first as alderman and then as Mayor, worked actively to acquire this land for the district. If he’ was so. actively involved in acquiring park- land, why is he so willing to trade-off or sell it as he and council were prepared to do on the first application by the N.S.W.C. to rezone approx. -06 of an acre of Bridgman Park for the purpose of expanding the W.C? On Jan.3/78 a_ public hearing is to be held on the new by-law concerning an exchange of land between the district and the N.S.W.C. The exchange involves appx. 12,300 sq.ft. (0.28 acres). ° , Dear Editor: Further to my telephone conversation of December 15 | re Carson Graham Secondary School ‘‘Open House’’ by the Home Economics Dept. for a Christmas affair for Seniors. on the North Shore, .please find enclosed some details re same. I think it is a- wonderful thing that the youth in the Carson Graham went out and - baked and cooked and decorated this mammoth cooking effort to give us a Chris ‘mas party. About 100 students (of that number, 30 boys) took part. They are students in Home Economics at C.G. under Mrs.’ Ada Ducker and Miss Peggy Know (teachers). Manacer of this Open House was (student) Cynthia Spence and her assistant manager (student) Sydney Carr. These two also were responsible for the beautiful Christmas decorations in the two rooms and the table displays, etc. The food was - made by all the students (100) that took part. | It was a free Open House and transportation provided to and from. I feel a great big thank you from the Seniors to the students of C.G. Home Economics should be put in our own North Shore News. Mrs. Dorothy Myers | North Vancouver Christmas Bureau Correction Last week we incorrectly stated that the Merchants on page 26 had donated money to the Christmas Bureau. It should have been the Mer- chants on page 16. The N.S.W.C. wants the land “a to-,;the south-east of their present site and near Lynn Creek. The district will get the northern end of a parcel . -near Keith Rd. At present the portion along Keith Rd. -~ is an area of grass and large trees which is used to screen the Winter Club from Keith Rd. In the original by-law before council a great deal of discrepancies were found. These were discovered by _ the public not by council or mayor. Why. did the mayor, council and municipal staff. allow the original by-law to get through first reading, public hearing, planning and policy and then onto second and third reading before the mayor decided to recom- mend to council that it be sent back to council-in- committee? ° At that point the N. S. W. C. approached the council with the new proposal involving th exchange. Why .is the -council so willing. to.accom-— modate this club? The club received tax grants for appx. . 5 years and now. they want some parkland and council seems prepared to go along ‘ with this request. Why, with an increasing population, are we prepared to let parkland go? We need more parkland, be it deve- loped or in -its natural wilderness state. . Stakes showing the land involved in the. trade are to be in one week before the public hearing so council and members of the public will be - aware of the land involved. The stakes will be in appx. Dec. 28/77. ~_. _ Once the public hearing has taken place all communi-. cation between the mayor, council and public is cut off. So. it is very important that letters of protest. reach the mayor before Jan. 3/78. If you (i.e. the public - ED.) want to save this park please attend the public hearing and | voice your opinion! It is _important the mayor and council are aware of public feeling. Make your mayor and council accountable to the people who elect them! ‘(Ms.) P.E.
